Metabolism is that magical word which you need to teach your body while it is doing nothing. Well, as a matter of fact it is true. However, there is a catch. You have to put in a lot of effort and that too in a systematic way.

The one simple trick to speed up your metabolism is to increase your muscle mass. And, how you do that? It’s as simple, to increase your muscle mass all you got to do is exercise. Exercising for weight is hardly a secret and you have been doing it all along. However, you need to know that once the weight is off, and you have successfully gained muscles, your body then will require more calories to survive.

So, the best part is you can now not only lose weight but, also can more as well. Sounds great, right?

Now you must be wondering that how can you do that as there are always chances of you getting the flab again? On gaining muscles, your BMR or basal metabolic rate increases. The BMR is the amount of calories your body needs to survive each day. It is the amount you will burn anyway even if your body does nothing but rest for 24 hours.

So, long story short, your body needs calories to function properly. By cutting out the necessary calories from the diet is unhealthy and also not helpful for long term weight management.

According to dietician and nutritionist Helen Bond, BMR speeds up when you gain muscle. She also added that, to boost the body’s fat-burning mechanism, you also need to include strengthening exercises and aerobics.

These core exercises will increase the calories your body burns during and after the exercises. You can combine your aerobics exercises with strength training- lifting weights and using the weight of your own body to build the muscles. The trick is, more muscles you will have, faster will be the rate of metabolism in your body. You are going to burn calories even when in rest.

Once your BMR is being boosted, burning calories will not be a problem at all even if you take few days or weeks off from exercise when on holiday. The key to weight loss lies in speedy metabolism and soon your body will catch up with losing calories and maintaining the weight.

This is not the end though!

Foods are another important factor apart from exercises that will help in boosting metabolism. Lab studies have shown results with regards to green tea, chilies, ginger, grape fruit, pepper and coffee in boosting metabolism. Keeping aside the lab reports, in real world, eating these foods is unlikely to bring any results in your weight loss.

Restricting calories too much is also not the ideal way. Make sure you are eating enough to cover your BMR. It is what your body needs when at rest. You also need to eat a balanced diet as deficiency of nutrients has an impact on your energy to exercise.

On a general note, health experts recommend a woman eating not more than 2000 calories a day and for a man, the number is 2500 a day. These are just average numbers and the real amount is different based on your age and level of exercise.
